| | | Engaged in the world: School and Community Service | | Open School is a caring place where service to the school and wider community forms the foundation for students to live their lives as active citizens. As a graduation requirement, every Open School student completes 150 hours each of service to the school and the community.
Community Service Some students choose to complete some community service hours by joining a class called, "Community Involvement." Once a week these students go the Bridge View School, and participate in a music therapy class. This gives our students a valuable opportunity to interact with students with disabilities. It's a lot of fun and both groups of students benefit and make friends. On other days, students go help in our local community in Women's shelters, the Salvation Army, the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store, hospitals and veterinary clinics.
School Service Just as you would in a family, Open School students have responsibilities to school and fulfill them in a variety of ways. Some choose to assist teachers during a free class period, some help with cleaning and maintenance of the school, and some participate on the site council – attending meetings and taking part in decisions that shape how the school runs. Open School is the only school in the district to give students majority representation on the site council.
