On April 12 & 13, a group of Open School students (and hundreds of other  youth) attended PeaceJam, an international education program that inspires a new generation of peacemakers.  The conference was centered around the work of
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his courageous leadership in efforts to find a nonviolent solution to the conflicts over the policy of apartheid in South Africa.  Read on for a report from Nikia Davis:

After 3 years of Peace Jam, we have been provided with a stellar celebration - again! Every year a diverse group of people come to

Peace Jam from all over the world to make a difference in their schools and communities.  The best part of Peace Jam is not just the passion that the youth have for their communities, but the reward in seeing a living example of peace -- the Nobel Peace Laureates who attend the conference with us.

At Peace Jam we get to meet unselfish people who have sacrificed their own well being for others.  This year Desmond Tutu and his daughter, Naomi Tutu were there.  He was my favorite because he is very easy going and mischievous -- in a good-natured

way.  There were local mayors there and Rep. Keith Ellison -- I felt like I was at the Grammys!  The best part of the weekend was when Desmond Tutu signed a petition for justice in Tibet.

I look forward to going to Peace Jam every year because the experience is well worth the time and I never leave dissapointed.  If you have never attended PeaceJam, sign up next year because it is a worthwhile experience!!
