| | | More about Jane... | | I was born on the Lower East SIde of Manhattan- a neighborhood in which I would hear at least four languages if I walked four blocks. The highlights of my childhood were Saturdays at the Henry St. Settlement Playhouse, where I studied dance with Murray Louis. Dance class was followed by a walk to the local library, where I took out an armload of books, and walked back home to devour them while soaking my sore muscles.
After my urban upbringing, I wanted to go to "the country" for college, so I went to Grinnell Iowa. I was a Classics major, but I also participated in the college dance group. One of my fellow dancers wanted to start a class for faculty children, and I helped her. After she graduated I took over and opened up the class to town kids as well. By the time I graduated, I had decided that I wanted to teach dance.
First, I had to study more dance, so I moved to Minneapolis to study with Nancy Hauser. Later, I went back to NY and studied some more with Murray. I then went to Temple University to get a Masters in Dance, and while I was there started a children's dance company and taught freelance dance.
Finally, I started to weary of the freelance life, and my love for the Twin Cities was calling, so I came back here, got my teaching license, got a job, bought a house, and adopted an eight year old girl, Melissa. I have taught 2 and 3rd grade at EXPO, dance at EXPO and at Dayton's Bluff, and I hope to stay at Open and retire when my first group of second graders graduates.
And, last but not least, I am the very doting grandmother of Destiny and Alex.
