Open School

5th-6th grade - Jack's Class
Absolute focus on children is the hallmark of my class. Instilling a sense of joy in learning is the primary lesson plan. Once this environment is established, we work to achieve the standards set by the state in the most creative and child-centered manner the class and I can devise.

The model in the class is one of continuous progress so that students of various levels are working together. We have the option here at Open to move children to other grades depending on ability. For example, some children who are listed as fifth graders due to chronological age, are able to attend classes in our middle school grades, because of their ability.

When a child leaves my classroom in June, I see enthusiastic learners who will be excited to return to school in the fall.

A typical day in Jack’s class:
Much of our morning is spent talking, reading and writing so that we can create expressions of what we learn. A general school theme is established each quarter (such as balance, imagine, etc.) and students focus their energies exploring the theme. Lessons are fluid and presented primarily to small groups or individuals as needed.

A variation of the math curriculum is taught in the afternoon with a focus on meeting the individual student at their academic level in a manner consistent with their learning style.
