Read 180

Read 180 is a Scholastic program designed for young readers who need extra support.  The program at Open School is for 7th and 8th graders.  Read 180 is a two-class block, and has four separate sections within it.

Students all attend a large group section, where they are either involved with a group discussion, or get read to from a book picked by the classroom teacher.  Many students really enjoy large group, because it is the only time an adult reads to them for fun.

Next, they divide into three groups and spend the remaining time rotating through three stations.  The stations are small group, computer time, and silent reading area.  Read 180 is designed to keep student interest high in literature, while at the same time expecting them to be independent in their rotations.

In read 180, past students have read as many as 35 books in class and successfully completed comprehension tests on them!  The Read 180 room is a quiet space where students can feel comfortable getting extra support to help them be successful in school!

Reading In The Content

Donna teaches a 7th/8th grade and a 9th/10th grade reading class titled Reading In The Content.  These classes are offered to support students who need additional help in bringing their individual reading level up to their grade level.  District approved curriculum is used, including the Read 180, Edge and AMP programs.  Students are tested to determine their reading level and are then aided in picking level appropriate reading materials.  Both large group and small group instruction is used.

Open School believes in providing in class reading time for students who need to get their reading level up to grade level.  These classes have built in time to assure students spend time reading every day.
