| Mathematics: Taught as a Language, Applied as a Science and Enjoyed as an Art | | I have been at Open School since August 2007. For this 2008 - 2009
school year I will continue my work as a mathematics coach and, for the
first time in my career, exchange my classroom teaching for coaching in
technology integration. I will also handle some of the building tech
work. My first was spent teaching geometry and
algebra 1 along with being the math coach for the building. This
follows the enrollment of my three daughters Markyn, Kalea and Tieryn
in January of 2007. My family decided to relocate to St. Paul after we
returned from teaching English in South Korea. We searched throughout
the St. Paul school district for a place that we could raise our family
and provide our children with a place to grow as individuals. Open
school provides an environment that grows along with the student from
kindergarten through their senior year. It is a school that allows
them to be creative, self-directed, multi-cultural, and cared for as an
individual. While at Open School I hope to continue to build upon the
foundations set and nourished over the past three decades here at the
only K-12 building in the St. Paul district.
Before teaching at
Open School I was a mathematics teacher and coach in the Minnetonka
school district. Priors to teaching at Minnetonka I taught in Marin
County just north across | | Hans at the Soo Mok Wan. | the Golden Gate Bridge, in Fremont, CA south
of Oakland and I also taught in Chetek, WI. What I like most about
Open School is that whether you are a student or a staff member, if you
dream it, have the interest it and you can pursue it. Right now I am
looking forward to starting a live, student run, in-house, T.V.
broadcasting show as well as offering Lego League. I also have hopes
to offer A.P. Statistics in the mathematics department in the future.
When
I am not at Open School I enjoy spending time with my family playing
games, riding bicycle, and adventuring. My person hobbies are
racquetball, listening and playing music, hockey and other sports,
games and reading. Traveling around the country and the globe is my
most expensive hobby and the one I enjoy most when I am with my
family. Over the next few years I hope to spend time in both Central
and South America. Experiencing new places, peoples and their cultures
has interested me since I was a child and I hope to foster that within
my own children throughout their lives.
