More about Anna
AnnaPic
I like Open School because it is a small, positive community where I have the opportunity to get to know the students, teachers and staff.  As the K-8 science teacher I am excited to have the chance to work with students for several consecutive years.

This is my first year teaching at Open School. I have worked in education since 2000. I have taught science and environmental education at Frost Valley YMCA, Ashokan Field Campus and Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center.

My favorite thing to do at Open School is to teach science labs and activities. I love to teach lessons where students can learn through hands on activities and get involved in their education.

Outside of Open School I like to spend my time reading, playing outside and spending time with friends and family.

Anna’s Story
Although I was born in Albany, New York I consider South Burlington, Vermont to be my first home. My parents moved there early in my life as my father pursued his career in ministry and my mother returned to school to become a registered dietitian. My sister Rachel was born two years before me. As kids we were either playing together or fighting. As adults we are great friends. Rachel now lives in Connecticut and has two children of her own. My parents have since moved back to upstate New York.  It is hard for me to live so far away from my family and I visit them every chance that I get.

One of my favorite places in New York is the family cabin on the upper Hudson River. My parents bought the cabin when I was in elementary school and I grew up spending my summers there. When I am at the cabin I like to hike, kayak, canoe and play outside. Even though I live in Minnesota now I return to the cabin for a week every summer.

My love of the outdoors led to my career teaching environmental education. As a naturalist I taught classes outside that focused on ecology and environmental issues. One of my favorite classes to teach was pond ecology. During this class my students used giant nets and buckets to catch insects and fish to learn about life in a pond.

I have had the chance to travel a few times in my life. When I was in high school I participated in a student exchange to Russia where I lived with a family in Moscow for two weeks. In college I spent a semester studying in England and traveling around Europe. I also like to explore new places in the United States whenever I can. The things that I love most about traveling are the sense of adventure, discovering new places and meeting new people.

Four years ago I moved to Minnesota to teach at Wolf Ridge Environmental Center. I enjoyed my adventures in Minnesota so much that I decided to stay here and go back to school for teaching. I moved to Minneapolis and finished my teaching degree at Hamline University. In the process, I met my now fiancé, Christopher, and we are planning a wedding for next summer.
