3rd/4th Grade - Phyllis's Class
Our class has both 3rd and 4th graders.  We have worked hard to build a friendly community.   We learn social skills through activities and routines of the Responsive Classroom.  We practice CARES:  Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, and Self Control.
Every morning we start with a Morning Meeting.  We get a chance to share, do an activity together, and problem solve.  We have fun and pretty much really get along.

We love books and read a lot.  We hope to increase and improve our reading for both pleasure & information.
We began the year reading Nancy Carlson’s books to help us learn more about CARES.  We made posters that we put up in the school.  We created plays and shared them with Jane’s class.
Late in October, we read Dive! about creatures deep in the ocean. For the Fall door contest, we decorated our door with scary fish and a ten foot Giant Squid!
Since then, we have been learning about Oceans.  We have read many, many nonfiction books.  We wrote a short report about an ocean animal and are now writing a mini book about visiting a part of the ocean.
We love to get lost in books.  We have lots of books in our room and Kathy helps us find books in the library.  We are really good at reading for 20 minutes without stopping.
We get to have Pam and Kristen help us with reading every day.

We collect ideas in our Writers’ Notebooks.  Sometimes we listen to published authors, sometimes we get ideas out of our heads, sometimes we share ideas to help each other.  We like to talk about our writing to help us get our ideas straight.  We have published a story and got a chance to read each other’s writing. Some of us had some short essays published in the local paper.

Our main resource is Everyday Math.  We learn new ideas and review old ideas every day.  The math lessons go by very fast.  We have an extra time in the day for students who need some help.  We hope to increase our knowledge and be comfortable with Math.  We hope everybody learns that Math can be fun!
The 3rd grade students go to Math with Kim.  All the 4th graders come to Phyllis’ room.

We learned to identify the continents and oceans.  We learned some songs, drew maps, and used reference books to find information.  Now we also know a lot about oceans.

Anna teaches Science to the class.  The third graders have learned about rocks and are learning about sound. The fourth graders have learned about water.
Mark is the PE teacher.  Students have learned many games and sports.

We like to sing songs in our classroom.   We learned about classical music for a field trip to see the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.  Then we got a chance to learn about Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker and Ellington’s Swinging Nutcracker.  We went to Orchestra Hall to see a great performance.

We learned some ways to use watercolors.  We made a few different paintings.  We had drawing lessons to draw ocean animals with colored pencils.  A lot of us work on art projects when we have Choice or Silent Time.
